Review of Sex Education Strategy

Anna Martinez, the coordinator of the Sex Education Forum has been named as a member of the SRE Review Steering Group. Launching the review, the Schools Minister Jim Knight acknowledged that current provision is patchy despite recent progress, and said that reducing teenage pregnancy rates will depend on good delivery of SRE.

The review will cover primary and secondary schools, and will try to identify how to provide consistency in SRE delivery through sharing of best practice and provision of practical support for teachers, and ways of encouraging senior management teams in schools to provide better leadership on SRE. Mr Knight will co-chair the steering group, with Jackie Fisher, principal of Newcastle College, and Joshua McTaggart of the UK Youth Parliament as the other co-chairs. The other members of the Group are drawn from schools and colleges, local authorities, faith groups, the Independent Advisory Group on teenage pregnancy, sexual health organisations, and the UK Youth Parliament.
